Aged (Aged / Matured)

Definition: Cigars that have rested in a humidor for more than 3 years

Condition:

• The maturation process is ongoing or complete
• Residual ammonia has volatilized
• Flavors have opened up, and layers have integrated

The Flavor of Fresh

The flavor of a fresh cigar is like "a legion that has just enlisted":

• The flavors of each tobacco leaf are distinct and side by side

• But the layers are "as if behind glass"; they do not integrate

The Oiliness of Fresh

• Oils are concentrated in the Wrapper and are uneven
• The first puff feels oily, while the later section declines

• Oils migrate and become evenly distributed throughout the entire cigar

This is why aged cigars feel "enjoyable from start to finish": the oils are evenly distributed.

Fresh

• Burns relatively fast (the moisture in the tobacco leaves has not fully balanced)
• Ash is grayish white and relatively loose

• Burns steadily and slowly
• Ash is white and firm; it can hold for 2-3 cm without falling
• Plume crystals may appear (5+ years)

Reading the Box Code

The bottom of the cigar box has a box code (factory code + month + year).

Example: "LUB MAY 19"

• LUB = La Corona factory
• MAY = May
• 19 = 2019

To verify genuine aging: compare the box code against the time when you acquired it.

Wrapper Sheen

• Aged wrappers are oily and glossy, with an "aged sheen"
• Fresh wrappers are fresh but lack a "sense of depth"

Weight

• Aged cigars are slightly lighter (moisture has fully balanced)
• Fresh cigars are slightly heavier

Plume

• 5+ years aged: white crystalline Plume may appear
• Fresh: Plume absolutely will not appear

The most precious cigar experience: Opening a Cohiba that you have matured for 10 years with good friends. That mouthfeel is something Fresh can never reach.
