Term 1: Wrapper

Meaning: The outermost tobacco leaf of a cigar.

Why it matters:

• Determines the cigar's appearance (color, sheen)
• Influences 30-40% of the flavor
• Is a signature of the artisan's craftsmanship

Common types:

• Connecticut Shade: creamy and floral (used by Macanudo Cafe)
• Habano: strong and spicy (used by Padron and Capadura)
• Maduro: dark and rich (used by Padron Anniversary)
• Ecuador: Cuban-like profile

Beginner's note: Seeing "Connecticut Wrapper" on a menu means lighter; "Maduro Wrapper" means heavier.

Term 2: Filler

Meaning: The tobacco leaves at the center of the cigar, accounting for 70% of its weight.

Why it matters:

• Determines the cigar's core flavor
• Made by blending 2-5 types of tobacco leaves (the Liga formula)

Common combinations:

• Volado (lower priming) + Seco (middle priming) + Ligero (top priming)
• Premium cigars include Medio Tiempo (rare top leaf)

Beginner's note: Filler is the "soul" of a cigar.

Term 3: Binder

Meaning: The middle tobacco leaf that wraps the filler and is not exposed.

Why it matters:

• Controls the burn rate
• Although it does not directly touch the lips, it affects the overall mouthfeel

Beginner's note: Three-layer structure = Wrapper + Binder + Filler.

Term 4: Vitola

Meaning: The cigar's "size name" plus shape combination.

Examples:

• Cohiba Robustos is a Vitola name (Robusto size)
• Montecristo No. 2 is a Vitola name (Pyramid shape)

Beginner's note: "No. 4", "Sublime", and "Esplendidos" on a menu are all Vitola names.

Term 5: Liga

Meaning: Each brand's "secret formula" for its filler tobacco.

Why it matters:

• Different Vitolas from the same brand may use the same Liga
• The formula is the brand's core IP (intellectual property)

Examples:

• Liga Privada (Drew Estate): "Liga" directly became the brand name
• Cohiba Behike Liga T: flagship formula (contains Medio Tiempo)

Beginner's note: Liga = the Spanish word for "formula/blend".

Term 6: Cap

Meaning: The small round covering at the head of the cigar.

Why it matters:

• Cutting a cigar means cutting this area (cut 2-3mm)
• Triple Cap = three-layer cap (seen on high-end cigars such as Cohiba)
• Pigtail Cap = pig-tail shape (Liga Privada)

Beginner's note: "Cap = the end you cut"; "Foot = the end you light".

Term 7: Foot

Meaning: The bottom end of the cigar, the end to be lit.

Features:

• You can see the filler tobacco leaves
• Toasting means heating this area
• Lighting means igniting this area

Beginner's note: Never cut the wrong end (do not cut the Foot).

Term 8: Habanos S.A. / Habano

Two terms that are often confused:

Habanos S.A.:

• A joint venture between the Cuban government and a global distributor
• Manages all Cuban cigar brands (Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, etc.)
• Global distribution is handled through authorized distributors (for example, PCC Pacific Cigar in the Asia-Pacific region)

Habano:

• A type of wrapper (Ecuador Habano, Nicaragua Habano, etc.)
• A non-Cuban wrapper with a Cuban-like profile

Beginner's note: "Habanos S.A." = Cuban company; "Habano" = wrapper type (not necessarily from Cuba).

Term 9: PCC (Pacific Cigar Company)

Meaning: One of Habanos S.A.'s important distributors in the Asia-Pacific region.

Why it matters:

• Cuban cigars in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia, and China are mainly distributed through PCC and multiple official channels

Term 10: Strength / Body

Two concepts that are easy to confuse:

Strength:

• Nicotine content and concentration of alkaloid compounds
• Affects physical impact (dizziness, heartbeat)
• Levels: Mild -> Mild-Medium -> Medium -> Medium-Full -> Full -> Full Plus

Body:

• Flavor density, oiliness, and the "weight" of the smoke
• Affects the layering of mouthfeel
• Levels: Light -> Light-Medium -> Medium -> Medium-Full -> Full

Examples:

• Davidoff Aniversario: Body leans Full, Strength is only Medium
• Liga Privada T52: Both Body and Strength are Full

Beginner's note: Ask about "Strength" first: beginners should avoid Full strength.

Advanced Terms (just remember them)

Toasting

The "toasting" step before lighting (not actually igniting).

Canoeing

Uneven burning, causing the cigar to look like a canoe.

Plume / Bloom

"White crystals" during the cigar aging process: a good sign (not mold).

Mold

White fuzz, blue-green spots: a bad sign; discard the entire box.

Cigar Beetle

Small insects that can hatch when the storage environment is too humid and too hot: a collector's nightmare.

Vintage / Aged

Cigars aged for more than 5 years: the value doubles.

Limited Edition (EL)

A limited version released by Cuba Habanos for specific brands each year.

Regional Edition (RE)

A limited version exclusive to a specific region.

Box Code

The factory code on the bottom of a cigar box (for example, "LUB MAY 24" = produced at the LUB factory in May 2024).
