On November 4, 1992, Habanos S.A. officially presented Línea 1492 at the Museo de la Ciudad de la Habana in Havana, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas - the year 1492, when Columbus landed and discovered Cuban tobacco. The word "Siglo" in the series name is Spanish for "century"; Siglo I through Siglo V each represents one century between 1492 and 1992.

Five cigars, five centuries. The concept is extremely concise, yet it contains El Laguito factory's precise thinking about five completely different smoking situations. In 1993, the series was publicly displayed again in London, and in the spring of 1994 it was officially released to the public. Siglo VI was a later addition, joining only in 2002 - it was not part of the original 500th-anniversary matrix.

170mm is the longest format in the Línea 1492 series (Siglo VI is 150mm, shorter but thicker). This length defines the basic character of Siglo V: ample space allows the flavors to evolve fully across different stages, while the 43 ring gauge maintains a precise filler cross-section and a relatively concentrated smoke density.

When rolling a Dalia, El Laguito's Torcedor faces a distinctive technical challenge: ensuring both smooth airflow and uniform filler density inside a long, slender channel. This requires a more precise touch than making the larger-ring Siglo VI. Factory code: EL (El Laguito). This Havana factory, established in 1966, is the sole production site of the Cohiba brand, and every Siglo in Línea 1492 leaves the factory from here.

Packaging options: standard SLB 25-count (slide lid box), and Tubos aluminum tube packaging (3 cigars per set). The Tubos version is suitable for travel occasions. For long-term aging, it is recommended to remove the cigars from the aluminum tubes and store them separately with Spanish cedar.

The advantage of the medium-slender 43 ring gauge is most obvious in the second stage - the narrow cross-section gives the smoke a slightly faster flow rate, making the rhythm of flavor transitions more clearly distinguishable than in wider-ring cigars.

Third stage (final 20-25 minutes): Mild spices replace the softness of leather, while a slight black pepper note brings a tightened finishing sensation. Concentrated cedar and an espresso-like roasted aroma form the conclusion. Overall, it ends in a clean manner, neither bitter nor aggressively spicy.

Aging Return

The aging potential of Siglo V benefits from Cohiba's unique third-stage fermentation process - all Cohiba tobacco leaves undergo a third fermentation after the standard Cuban two-stage fermentation, extending the cycle of flavor evolution after cellaring.

A 43 ring gauge means a faster aging progression than Siglo VI (52 ring gauge): the slimmer cross-section allows oxidative reactions to penetrate the entire filler in a shorter time. A freshly released Siglo V (within 3 years) has a woodiness that leans somewhat firm, with a slightly green first stage. After 5 years of aging, the honeyed quality and leather begin to integrate, and the second-stage layering becomes noticeably richer. A Siglo V of over 10 years is one of the highest-return formats in Línea 1492; after long-term aging, its slender form reveals an elegant depth approaching the level of Lanceros.

Taiwan climate recommendation: 65-68% humidity, 17-20°C. In summer, special attention should be paid to keeping humidity from exceeding 70%, to prevent the filler from over-expanding in a high-humidity environment and affecting combustion.
