Why does uneven burning happen?
New smokers may get halfway through a cigar and notice one side is burning fast while the other is burning slowly: "What should I do? Is this cigar ruined?"
It is not ruined. Uneven burning is common, and it can be corrected.
Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai uses practical experience to teach you how to correct 4 common problems.
Why does uneven burning happen?
Cause 1: Insufficient Toasting
If the Toasting before lighting is uneven -> some parts of the filler are hot while others are not -> after lighting, it burns unevenly.
Cause 2: Environmental airflow
Directly under an air-conditioning vent, outdoors in the wind, near a window -> wind blows on one side -> that side burns faster.
Cause 3: Incorrect smoking direction
Drawing only from one side (not rotating the cigar) -> airflow is stronger on that side -> it burns faster.
Cause 4: Uneven cigar storage
One side of the cigar is damp while the other side is dry -> the burning speed differs.
Cause 5: Craftsmanship defects in the cigar itself
In a small number of cases: the filler is uneven during rolling -> the cigar has an inherent issue when it leaves the factory (in this case, request an exchange).
Problem 1: Canoeing (most common)
Symptoms: One side of the cigar burns fast while the other side burns slowly; from the side, it looks like the shape of a canoe.
Correction method
Step 1: Determine which side is burning fast
Hold the cigar 30 cm away from your body and look from the Cap end toward the Foot:
- The side burning fast: more ash, deeper red burn ring
- The side burning slowly: protruding black unburned area
Step 2: Use a Torch flame to heat the slow-burning side
- Aim the flame only at the slow-burning side
- Keep a distance of 1-2 cm
- Slowly rotate the cigar
- Toast for 10-20 seconds
Step 3: Test with a gentle draw
After toasting, take a gentle draw -> see whether both sides glow evenly red.
If it is still not even: toast for another 10 seconds.
Step 4: Resume normal smoking
After correcting it, rotate the cigar while smoking; do not keep drawing from the same angle.
Preventing Canoeing
- Toast thoroughly (30-45 seconds, rotate in 4 directions)
- Rotate the cigar once every 5 puffs while smoking
- Avoid air-conditioning vents and wind outlets
Problem 2: Tunneling
Symptoms: The filler burns very deep, but the wrapper burns slowly; it looks as if it is "burning into the cigar."
Correction method
Tunneling is harder to correct than Canoeing, depending on severity:
Mild (filler is 5mm deep):
- Use a Torch to toast the outer edge of the wrapper
- Let the wrapper "catch up" with the filler
- 5-10 seconds is enough
Severe (filler is 1cm+):
- The success rate of correcting the burn is low
- Recommendation: use a blade to cut off the excess filler portion, then relight
Preventing Tunneling
- Do not draw too hard while smoking; drawing hard burns only the center, not the wrapper
- Maintain a rhythm of one puff every 60-90 seconds; do not go too fast
Problem 3: The ember has gone out but the cigar is still warm
Symptoms: Halfway through, you notice the cigar is no longer producing smoke, but the Foot is still warm.
Correction method
This is a "partially extinguished" state, which is easier to handle than a completely extinguished cigar:
Step 1: Clean the Foot surface
Use a blade or fingernail to gently scrape the gray-white ash buildup on the Foot surface, exposing a fresh black Foot.
Step 2: Toast again
- Keep the flame 1-2 cm away
- Toast for 15-20 seconds (shorter than the initial lighting)
- Rotate slowly
Step 3: Relight
- Put the cigar in your mouth and draw gently
- Watch for the entire circular surface of the Foot to glow red
Step 4: Confirm with the First Puff
Take one puff and confirm that it is burning evenly.
Prevention
- The smoking rhythm should not exceed 120 seconds per puff
- Do not set it down for a long time midway (5+ minutes)
Problem 4: Completely extinguished + Foot is already cold
Symptoms: It has been left for more than 10 minutes, and the Foot has completely cooled.
Correction method
This is "completely extinguished"; the quality of the correction will be reduced:
Step 1: Thoroughly clean the Foot
Use a blade or Punch to completely scrape off the gray-white ash buildup on the Foot; a clean black Foot must be exposed.
Step 2: Toast again (thoroughly)
Same as the initial lighting:
- 30-45 seconds
- Slowly rotate in 4 directions
- Watch for the edge of the Foot to glow evenly red
Step 3: Relight
Complete the full Light procedure.
Step 4: First Puff
The first puff will have a "carbon buildup taste" and bitterness; this is normal, and it will recover after 3-5 puffs.
Accept reality
After a complete extinguishing and relighting, cigar quality will decline by 20-30%; this is unavoidable.
Handling environmental problems
Wind is too strong (outdoors)
Short-term handling:
- Block the wind with your hand or an ashtray
- Or move to a windless place
Long-term solution: Outdoor smoking = use a Torch lighter with strong flame power (ordinary lighters cannot withstand the wind).
Directly under an air-conditioning vent
Short-term: Move to another position
Long-term: The airflow design of W Cigar Bar 紳士雪茄館 avoids all guest seats -> so our environment is stable.
Too humid (improper storage)
Symptoms: The cigar has poor draw, burns extremely slowly, and the smoke is thin
Handling:
- Short-term: a cigar that cannot draw is basically ruined
- Long-term: control the storage environment humidity at 65-72%
Too dry (improper storage)
Symptoms: Burns extremely fast, becomes charred black, and has a tar taste
Handling:
- Short-term: put it back in the humidor with Boveda packs for 1-2 weeks to recover
- Long-term: the humidor needs humidification
How to judge whether burn correction was successful
After correcting it, take 3-5 puffs and observe:
Correction successful:
- The burn ring glows evenly red
- Flavor returns to normal
- No sharp bitterness
Correction failed:
- The burn remains crooked
- The flavor is bitter and spicy
- It repeatedly goes out
Options if correction fails:
- Try once more
- Or bravely set it down and open a new one
Conclusion
Uneven cigar burning is something every beginner goes through; if you know how to correct the burn, you waste 30% fewer cigars.
But what matters more is prevention: thorough Toasting, a steady rhythm, avoiding airflow, and proper storage.
The environment at W Cigar Bar 紳士雪茄館 is "windless + constant temperature + genuine products", allowing your cigar to burn steadily and reducing the need for burn correction.
