Why should you not flick cigar ash?
The most common reflex among beginners: take two puffs, then flick the ash.
This is wrong. Cigar ash is handled completely differently from cigarette ash - ash is the "signature" of cigar quality, and should not be flicked casually.
Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai shares practical experience to teach you the correct way to handle ash.
Why should you not flick cigar ash?
Reason 1: Ash is a natural "insulating layer"
When a cigar burns, the grayish-white ash that forms around the edge of the Foot is a natural insulating layer:
- Keeps the burning temperature stable
- Slows overheating
- Lets the tobacco leaves "smolder" rather than "burn"
- Protects the cigar's flavor
Flicking off the ash -> the burning temperature suddenly rises -> the next few puffs may become bitter, spicy, and harsh.
Reason 2: Ash is an indicator of craftsmanship
The ash of a high-quality cigar should be able to hold for more than 2 cm without falling - this is an indicator of craftsmanship:
- Good tobacco leaf quality (tight fibers)
- Correct blend proportions (Volado/Seco/Ligero balance)
- Firm rolling
- Even burn
Ash that can hold for 2-3 cm = good cigar quality.
Reason 3: Flicking ash disrupts the rhythm
A cigar is a "slow and calm" ritual - flicking ash frequently means wasting energy and disrupting focus during appreciation.
The 3 correct steps for handling ash
Step 1: Observe the ash
Every 5-10 puffs, observe the ash:
- Color: white (high quality) / gray (medium) / dark gray (ordinary)
- Firmness: how long can it hold?
- Integrity: are there any cracks?
Step 2: Wait for it to fall naturally
Ash will naturally break off when it reaches about 2-3 cm. This is the correct timing - let it fall on its own.
If you have already smoked until the ash is almost 3 cm but it has not fallen:
- You may gently rest it against the edge of the ashtray to let it break off
- Do not tap, do not flick
Step 3: Let the ash fall into the ashtray
Let the ash fall into the ashtray - do not let it fall onto clothing, the table, or the floor.
The correct timing for "flicking ash"
Although in most cases you should not flick ash, these 3 situations are acceptable:
Timing 1: The ash exceeds 4 cm and still has not fallen
Ash that is too long carries risks:
- It may suddenly fall onto clothing or furniture
- It affects the cigar's center of gravity and makes it harder to hold
Handling: lightly rest it against the edge of the ashtray to break it off (still not "flicking").
Timing 2: The ash is leaning (and is about to fall where it should not)
For example, the ash is about to fall into:
- The other person's wine glass
- Food in the center of the dining table
- Someone else's suit
Handling: lightly rest it to break it off, control the direction, and do not wave it around in panic.
Timing 3: The ash is already clearly cracked
If the ash looks like it is "half cracked", continuing to smoke may make it fall in an uncontrollable place.
Handling: rest it lightly to complete the break, then continue smoking.
Ash characteristics of different cigars
Cuban cigars
- White ash (most of the time)
- Firm, able to hold long
- A representative sign of high quality
Dominican cigars (Davidoff, Macanudo)
- White-gray ash
- Medium firmness
- Refined flavor
Nicaraguan cigars (Padrón, Liga Privada)
- Dark gray ash
- High firmness
- Concentrated strength
Machine-made cigars
- Grayish-white but loose
- Breaks easily
- Rougher craftsmanship
5 common mistakes in handling ash
Mistake 1: Flicking ash frequently
Symptom: flicking after every 1-2 puffs Problem: disrupts the burn rhythm and makes the flavor bitter
Correct approach: let the ash naturally accumulate to 2-3 cm.
Mistake 2: Tapping hard against the ashtray
Symptom: smashing the whole cigar against the ashtray to shake off the ash Problem: may damage the wrapper and cause an uneven burn
Correct approach: simply rest it lightly against the edge of the ashtray.
Mistake 3: Unconsciously waving it while talking
Symptom: one hand gesture, and the ash flies off Problem: it may fall on the other person, the table, or clothing
Correct approach: put the cigar down while talking, or steady it with the other hand.
Mistake 4: Panicking and patting when ash falls on clothing
Symptom: ash falls on clothing -> patting it with your hand -> the ash is pressed into the fibers Problem: patting pushes the dust deeper in, making it harder to clean
Correct approach: gently blow it off, and do not pat.
Mistake 5: Wiping immediately when ash falls on carpet
Symptom: ash falls on the carpet -> wiping it with your hand or a tissue Problem: wiping rubs the ash into the fibers, making it harder to clean
Correct approach: wait for the ash to cool, then use a vacuum cleaner.
What should you do if ash falls on the floor?
At W Cigar Bar, guests sometimes drop ash onto the table or floor:
Standard handling procedure:
- Do not panic - this is normal
- Do not pat or wipe - let it cool
- Notify the staff to handle it - we have professional cleaning tools
Do not do the following:
- Rinse with hot water (it will cause the ash to spread)
- Rub hard (it may damage the carpet)
- Kneel down to handle it yourself (letting service staff handle it is proper etiquette)
Advanced: "appreciation reading" of ash
Experienced aficionados can read a cigar's condition from its ash:
| Ash characteristics | Cigar condition |
|---|---|
| White, firm, can hold 3+ cm | High quality, well preserved |
| Gray, firm, can hold 2 cm | Medium quality, normal |
| Dark gray, loose, breaks easily | Ordinary quality or poor preservation |
| Black and oily-glossy | Cigar is too moist, poor draw |
| Gray with a green tinge | Abnormal, possible mold |
Ash is the cigar's "report card" - the more you observe, the more you will understand.
Conclusion
Ash is not "waste"; it is the signature of cigar quality, the insulating layer of the burn, and an indicator for appreciation reading.
Do not flick the ash, let it break naturally, and observe its characteristics - this is the path every beginner must take to become an aficionado.
